Hotel development is forever in a state of flux. Creating a new encounter or refreshing a tired palate is what keeps guest experiences unique and stimulating. Barely 12 months ago, we were eagerly anticipating the launch of a number of hotels in London. The COVID-19 pandemic clearly had other ideas, leading to disappointed hoteliers, unveiling delays, and soft openings.

It is well publicised that the hotel and tourism industry has been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Mired in the seemingly never-ending rollercoaster of hospitality restrictions and lockdowns, it’s easy to forget those who pressed on with their plans undeterred, employing some pandemic-compliant ingenuity to showcase some stellar design.

Nobu Hotel treated a limited number of guests to the unveiling of their Japanese-inspired, neo-chic rooms in Marylebone’s Portman Square, confidently hosting attendees at a distance, together with the use of enhanced cleaning measures.

Birch opened its doors to the English countryside and welcomed guests with a socially distanced fire pit dinner in the brisk Hertfordshire air. Birch’s explosive popularity illustrates the best of what the British countryside offers in these unprecedented times – homegrown ‘escape-to’ destinations offering the fantasy resort experience we all yearn for, not to mention the strong calling back to personal health and a connection to nature.

Iconic Luxury Hotels’ much-lauded project, The Mayfair Townhouse, dazzled during a gentle December 2020 opening. While their celebrations were short-lived (forced to close due to lockdown 3.0), their hard work on additional outdoor dining facilities stands them in good stead for a scheduled reopening in early 2021, when COVID-19 distancing protocols will undoubtedly still be the norm.

With continued optimism of the vaccine rollout, Spring 2021 will likely see a burst of openings as many COVID-stalled projects come online. With this in mind, and to celebrate the unsung heroes who have taken the punishing decision to ‘hold off’, we ask ourselves and the industry a simple question:

Once COVID-19 passes, where would you go? More specifically, which city, hotel, or building is your ideal escape and why? What will be your next getaway #mynextgetaway?
