Make provided pro bono design services for Wings South West, a charity that works with marginalised young people, to create this purpose-built youth, sport and community centre in North Devon.
The multipurpose centre includes a large sports hall, a performance space, a fitness studio, general offices and meeting rooms, a church, a community shop, a café, and 150 car parking spaces – all in a striking building designed in accordance with Sport England guidelines. We incorporated new areas of public realm and pedestrian routes to provide external space for local community use.
Our design draws on the agricultural heritage of the local Bideford area and is inspired by a traditional tithe barn. The chosen materials – profiled metal sheet for the roof and timber for the rainscreen facade – are commonly used in the construction of agricultural buildings, though their high-quality detailing elevates them.
The result is a familiar and welcoming structure that beckons the public to come take a look at the exciting activities taking place inside.
Make has the experience, imagination and expertise to translate the dreams of clients into reality, and in the case of The Bridge Centre, through integrating considerations of place, simplicity and interconnectivity.
