Make’s competition-winning design for Ovolo Central in Hong Kong reimagines the boutique hotel’s lower ground, ground and first floors, and delivers a new facade to those levels.
The facade – a delicate, glazed black metal grid – creates a more welcoming residential expression and increases natural daylight and ventilation. Four new entrances open the hotel to the area’s increasing footfall due to the newly opened Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts, just a five-minute walk away.
Inside, a new double-height space between the lower ground and ground floors is connected by a linear feature staircase. On the lower ground floor is the intimate vegetarian restaurant VEDA. The ground floor serves as the check-in area, with the main lift lobby adjacent. The first floor, meanwhile, has a state-of-the-art meeting room with a balcony.
The interior design, inspired by the Ovolo brand and the hotel’s eclectic, artistic neighbourhood, uses similar materials in different forms and quantity across the three levels. These include timber flooring, panelling and joinery, terrazzo flooring, botanical-print tiles and wallpaper, leather handrails and benches, glass screening and soft upholstery. It also incorporates Ovolo’s signature ‘Sphere’ light and stainless steel ‘egg wall’ on the ground floor, as well as a selection of bold artworks, fixtures and fittings chosen by the client.
