The panel of judges, which includes designers, hoteliers and industry commentators, described Capella Sydney as “sympathetic, understated and elegant,” particularly praising the “expert transitions between new and existing architecture” resulting in “a reimagined sequence of spaces that delight”.
With architecture by Make and interiors by BAR Studio, Capella Sydney transforms a heritage-listed former government building in Sydney into a world-class luxury hotel, setting a new standard for hospitality in the region. Our design honours the building’s heritage while bringing it firmly into the 21st century, with 192 grandly proportioned guestrooms, a spa and wellness centre, and a variety of new publicly accessible restaurant and bar venues, plus event spaces on the ground floor. Designed for Pontiac Land Group, the hotel is the first Australian property for the Capella Hotel Group.
Michelle Evans, lead designer, says: “Capella Sydney is a once-in-a-generation project that we’re incredibly privileged to have worked on. It’s an honour to have it celebrated by AHEAD, and we’re proud to have been part of an incredible and collaborative project team.”
