This year, Make will again welcome members of the public to visit our central London studio, as part of the London Festival of Architecture’s ‘LFA Open Studios’ programme.

Who is Make?

Make is a different kind of architecture practice. Founded by Ken Shuttleworth in 2004, we’re an employee-owned firm pursuing a democratic design process. Today we have more than 150 people in London, Hong Kong and Sydney providing architecture, interior and urban design services from concept to completion.

Our studio

In 2015 we moved into our new studio at 32 Cleveland Street, which we designed ourselves. Formerly an NCP car park, it’s in the basement of Middlesex House in Fitzrovia. The building itself is a beautiful example of Art Deco architecture and was at one point a garment factory.

We retained and refurbished many original features, from the multi-pane windows and concrete pillars to the yellow paintwork details. The studio receives plenty of natural daylight, thanks to the clear, plastic ETFE roof over our entrance ramp, a new glass block rooflight, and three lightwells, one which is now a garden courtyard for staff.

Your visit

Expect models in all shapes, sizes and materials, 3D printers going full-tilt, project photos, friendly Makers, and the chance to experience virtual reality with our HTC VIVE headset. You can also visit our fantastic neighbours upstairs, Glenn Howells Architects and Fletcher Priest Architects.
