This is a milestone year for us as we celebrate 20 years of Make Architects and all we’ve learned and achieved along the way.
We have lots of celebrations planned for the year, but we wanted to start by thanking our clients, collaborators, friends and, not least of all, our brilliant team of Makers in London, Hong Kong, Sydney and Shanghai.
Make founder Ken Shuttleworth said: “Make officially began in January 2004. This milestone birthday is an opportunity for us to reflect on where we started 20 years ago, along with our commitment as a practice to deliver great design that brings value to people. We started out with two desks in the corner of Arup’s office, and now we’re an international practice with an incredible legacy of projects spanning architecture, interiors and urban design.
But the legacy goes beyond our built portfolio. We were the first 100% employee-owned company and are the only architecture practice that was established as employee owned from day one, and we’ve supported many others on their own EO journey. Constantly seeking to improve our practice and our impact, we’ve now also become B Corp accredited, which we’re enormously proud of. Make Neutral, our dedicated sustainability team, has been integral not only to this accreditation but also to our design approach and ongoing knowledge sharing.
We’ve established the Future Spaces Foundation and the student competitions and ambassadors programmes that run as part of its annual research programme. We’re also now in the seventh year of The Architecture Drawing Prize, which runs in collaboration with the World Architecture Festival and Sir John Soane’s Museum and celebrates incredible architectural artistic talent.
But despite all this, our vision has never really changed. We’ve always been about championing people and remaining curious about how architecture and evolving construction can improve the way we live. We’re excited to be part of what comes next!”
