This elegant, 40-storey residential tower and 11-storey office building occupy a prominent place a stone’s throw from Old Street station, in the heart of London’s Tech City. As concept architects, we responded with a design that celebrates the capital’s position as a centre for creativity and innovation.
Twelve architectural ‘blades’ decrease in height to create a slender, sculpted top to the residential tower, and are clad in aluminium panels in varying shades of silver. All 302 luxury apartments enjoy dual-aspect windows and private balconies, and residents have access to an extensive range of amenities including a spa, steam room, gym and mezzanine-level pool with floor-to-ceiling windows. There’s also a private screening room, business centre, and dedicated children’s play area.
The office building, with its distinctive black gridded facade and flexible internal layout, is now fully occupied by the 145 City Road branch of WeWork. Tenants have access to three roof terraces, while a series of green walls further enhance the outdoor space.
A new public space – representing over 35% of the site – sits between the two buildings and their mixed retail offering. Together, these elements make The Atlas Building a dynamic new destination for people to live, work and socialise.
The tower has pushed the boundaries of design in this fast-changing area. It needed to stand out, and that has certainly been achieved.
The scheme creates a valuable mix of residential, commercial and business accommodation that will establish an exciting new destination in Shoreditch.
