Changing it up: Make commissions artist Garth Knight for groundbreaking new display suite

Faced with one of the most stunning settings for a new apartment scheme in Sydney, Australia, overlooking Sydney Park, international practice Make Architects has taken a unique view to designing the interior scheme and marketing suite for One Sydney Park.

400 apartments on the site – which is currently home to two old industrial units on the eastern edge of Sydney Park – are soon to be sold off plan by developer HPG.

Inspired by the location, Make has designed an interior scheme which brings the outside in through picture and corner windows, materials, and detailing that will serve to remind occupants of their unique environment. The practice has also crafted a beautiful display suite that takes visitors on a carefully sequenced journey, not only exhibiting the finishes but also giving a real sense of the atmosphere and character the development will have.

Make translated an original vision from LAVA to develop a clover-shaped marketing suite within a redundant warehouse. This suite playfully sets the scene for what future owners can expect.

Sydney-based sculpture artist Garth Knight, known for his bondage series, was commissioned to create a huge multidimensional tree within the marketing suite to evoke the feelings of sitting under a canopy within the park itself.  Knight’s sculptural installations are crafted from rope and he was the perfect choice for this project, offering a unique interpretation of nature and transformation through an unusual and sensual medium. The piece is about connection, trust and communication, with rocks hanging from the tree to symbolise the strength and power of the earth.

Make partner Tracey Wiles said: “The location, overlooking one of the most beautiful, experiential parks in Sydney, is superb. Who wouldn’t want a home with a park for your backyard? Our interiors scheme is solely inspired by its setting, using timbers, marble and stone to express the natural materiality of the park, with its grey gums and classic Australian dappled light.

“Likewise Garth’s installations are perfect for the project – sculptural, evocative and playful. We wanted the display suite to translate the uniqueness of these homes and to have a piece of interpretive art as the centrepiece. This one, which is so in tune with its surroundings, is faultless.”

Visitors are taken on a carefully curated journey through the marketing suite, with each of the clover petals acting like a self-contained pod. Some demonstrate the superior standard of materials and fixtures, while others, like Garth Knight’s tree pod, provide a more sensory experience. Elsewhere in the suite is a beautifully crafted timber and rope swing and a lounge and kitchen area where visitors can choose their preferred home within the scheme and even select their finishes and fittings.

Tracey continued: “HPG has taken a truly international approach to the design, encouraging collaboration and generosity of design to influence the materials and options available. The aim is to provide an interiors scheme akin to a luxurious hotel environment. Undoubtedly, these will be some of the most well-considered apartments in Australia, with an unparalleled relationship to exceptional views, attention to crafted detail and a natural materiality that resonates with the surroundings. We are delighted to be part of an exceptional team with a holistic vision for this unique site and are really pleased with how our designs for the display suite have manifested.”

Alongside influencing the space planning and layout of the homes, Make has designed three different interior finishes for the bathrooms, kitchens and specific pieces of joinery within the homes, as well as a range of uplift points so purchasers can create a home that suits their style and personality.

Choosing from light, dark or timber colourways, purchasers can opt for matte white, matte charcoal lacquer or timber veneer interior finishes, all with Gaggenau appliances. Kitchen islands have been designed as bespoke credenzas to provide storage and act as a beautiful additional piece of joinery with wraparound detailing. Splashbacks feature finely detailed marble with Corian surrounds. Bathrooms feature expansive picture mirrors to reflect the surroundings, as well as porcelain or sandstone tiles and fully integrated cantilevered Corian or Calacatta oro marble vanity benches.

Managing Director of HPG Australia Dr Adrian Liu said: “The collective input of the designers has achieved our goal of creating an environment where the buyer will feel they have a strong sense of the project and importantly, how deeply ingrained a relationship One Sydney Park will have with the park.

“The standard of design on the entire project really set the benchmark for the display suite and the market now has a certain level of expectation. We were mindful that that buyers of One Sydney Park homes will be incredibly discerning, design-conscious, and nature-loving individuals.

“When completed, it will be considered one of the most premium and carefully considered display suites and residential projects on the market, with every aspect intrinsically linked to the park.

“One Sydney Park will bring a new level of luxury to Alexandria and the inner west.”

Located at 205-215 Euston Road in Alexandria, One Sydney Park adjoins the 44-hectare Sydney Park and will become a natural extension of the masterplanned residential community, dramatically revitalising the south-eastern corner of the highly popular inner-city park for the local community.

Due for completion in early 2021, One Sydney Park comprises approximately 400 apartments including a mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments; two-storey Park Terraces and penthouse and Tree Top Terraces with private courtyards harnessing enormous views. Prices start at $765,000 for a one-bedroom apartment.

One Sydney Park is the latest in a string of high-profile projects won by Make Architects from its Sydney studio. The practice is also appointed to the interiors for Opera Residences at Circular Quay, the Wynyard Place office and transport hub in central Sydney, and the Sandstone Buildings hotel project for Pontiac Land.
