For this year’s Beijing Design Week, Make Architects have drawn upon the city’s traditional craft of kite-making as inspiration to create a temporary installation at the Great Leap Brewing site in the Chaoyang District.
The one-week installation will re-interpret the traditional art form of kite-making with a 21st century design, whereby the kite becomes a piece of playful, interactive furniture around which people can gather, drink and socialise.
Bill Webb, lead architect on the project, states: ‘we wanted to explore a craft that truly related to Beijing, and kite-making, while historic, still has an active part to play in the daily life of this city. By re-interpreting the kite’s application we can celebrate its role in the city.’
Great Leap Brewing, the pioneers of Beijing’s craft beer market, were the ideal choice of partner for this project as the notions of craft and tradition are fundamental to their own manufacturing processes. In honour of the occasion, Great Leap Brewing will be serving a special re-brand of one of their beers during the week which celebrates the project’s underlying theme of a modern interpretation of a traditional craft.
The installation will be held between 26thSeptember – 3rd October at Great Leap Brewing, 1/F, Zimin Mansion 12 Xinzhong Jie, near Chunxiu Lu, Chaoyang District, 朝阳区新中街乙12号, 紫铭大厦一层.
